Made in Kirkintilloch was an EDLC Trust project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which created an Industrial Heritage Centre within the upper floor of the newly-restored Town Hall. The project set out to engage the local community with Kirkintilloch’s rich industrial heritage through the display and interpretation of museum and archive collections.

To complement this, EDLC delivered an exciting programme of activities which took inspiration from the town’s industrial history. We worked with a range of organisations – including schools, reading groups, older people’s support groups and care homes, and heritage, history and craft groups across the community – and drew on the expertise of artists and heritage specialists.

The broad range of activities included plaster casting with schools, reminiscence and creative writing sessions, history walks, wood carving, and metal casting and forging.

There have been opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the development of the flexible exhibition space within the Town Hall – co-curating their own collections with support from EDLC staff. A community learning space has also been incorporated to be used for the delivery of heritage learning workshops to further engage the community with the history of the area.

A programme of exhibitions will continue in the co-curated space, along with the permanent displays in the Heritage Centre.

This opportunity was kindly supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and East Dunbartonshire Council.
